E124 is a bright red synthetic dye, manufactured from petrochemical intermediates the same way most azo dyes are — no plant, animal or insect material at any stage.
The name Cochineal Red A is a historical synonym, applied because the synthetic dye was developed to match the shade of natural cochineal red. It describes the colour it resembles, not what it is made from.
Why this page exists: the name is the trap
Our reference table flags this explicitly: some older descriptions conflate Ponceau 4R with actual cochineal because of the shared name, when the synthetic dye and the insect-derived one are entirely different substances with the same colour and, confusingly, overlapping names.
