What E296 (malic acid) actually is

Malic acid gives green apples their sharp taste. In food it adds sourness to sweets, drinks and fruit products and balances sweetness.

Most food-grade malic acid is synthesised industrially rather than extracted from fruit. Labels may say DL-malic acid for the synthetic form or L-malic acid for the form found in fruit.

Why this one is straightforward

Neither form involves animal material. Our reference table marks E296 halal with no caveat, the same as citric acid (E330).

How to check it yourself

  • No check is needed for E296 itself.

Where you'll run into it

Sour sweets and chewing gum, soft drinks and juice drinks, jams and fruit fillings, powdered drink mixes.

One ingredient down.

E296 (malic acid) is one line on the label. A typical label lists thirty more. Point the camera and the app checks every one of them in about three seconds — free, no account, and it works offline in the aisle where the signal doesn't.
