Gelling agent

Is pectin (E440) halal?

Halal Permissible according to the sourced references we check.

E440 is halal. Pectin is extracted from fruit — mainly citrus peel and apple pomace left over from juice production — and contains no animal material. It is the most common plant substitute for gelatin in sweets and jams.

What E440a (pectin) actually is

Pectin is a carbohydrate present in the cell walls of fruit. It is what makes jam set, and it is commercially recovered from the peel and pulp that citrus and apple juicing leaves behind.

E440(i) is standard pectin; E440(ii) is amidated pectin, chemically modified to set with less sugar. Both come from the same fruit source.

Why pectin is a good sign on a label

Pectin-set sweets are the straightforward alternative to gelatin-set ones. A gummy sweet listing pectin rather than gelatin has removed the hardest question on the pack.

There is no animal route and no source ambiguity — the raw material is fruit waste from juice manufacturing, and the economics only work that way.

The one thing to keep reading for is that a pectin-based sweet may still contain other ingredients worth checking, such as carmine for colour or shellac for glaze. Pectin resolves the gelling question, not the whole label.

How to check it yourself

  • No check needed for pectin itself.
  • In sweets, seeing pectin instead of gelatin is worth noticing — but scan on for E120 and E904, which are common in the same products.
  • Home jam-making pectin and commercial pectin are the same material.

Where you'll run into it

Jams and fruit preserves, pectin-set gummy sweets and fruit snacks, fruit fillings and glazes, some yoghurts and desserts, reduced-sugar spreads.

Common questions

Is pectin vegan?

Yes. It is extracted from fruit with no animal input at any stage.

Are pectin sweets halal?

The gelling agent is not an issue, but check the rest of the label — colourings such as E120 and glazing agents such as E904 appear in confectionery and are separate questions.

What is amidated pectin?

E440(ii), a modified pectin that gels with less sugar. The modification is chemical and the source is still fruit.

One ingredient down.

E440a (pectin) is one line on the label. A typical label lists thirty more. Point the camera and the app checks every one of them in about three seconds — free, no account, and it works offline in the aisle where the signal doesn't.
