Is vitamin D3 halal?
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is uncertain. Most commercial D3 is produced from lanolin, the grease in sheep's wool, which involves no slaughter — the sheep is shorn, not killed, for it. Some authorities still want the wool source confirmed. A plant-derived alternative, vitamin D2, avoids the question entirely.

What Vitamin D3 actually is
Vitamin D3 is added to fortify foods and supplements because natural dietary sources are limited and many diets fall short without it. It is the same form of vitamin D your skin produces from sunlight.
Commercial D3 is overwhelmingly derived from lanolin, the waxy secretion sheared from sheep's wool and refined into the vitamin. Sheep do not need to be slaughtered to produce it — wool is shorn from a living animal — which is why this sits differently from questions like gelatin or rennet.
Why lanolin-derived D3 still gets marked uncertain
The reasoning that clears most slaughter-related questions does not fully apply here, but a different one does: our reference table wants the lanolin's source animal and handling confirmed, and a bare vitamin D3 on a label gives no way to check that.
There is a clean alternative. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is derived from irradiated yeast or fungus and is plant-based with no sourcing question at all. It is somewhat less effective at raising blood vitamin D levels than D3, which is part of why D3 remains the more common fortification choice despite the added question.
Vegan-labelled D3 does exist — produced from lichen rather than lanolin — and it is becoming more common as demand for plant-based fortification grows.
Vitamin A carries a related but separate question. Our table marks vitamin A uncertain for the same animal-source reason: retinol is often derived from fish liver oil or dairy, while beta-carotene, a vitamin A precursor, is plant-derived, and the two are not interchangeable on a label.
How to check it yourself
- Look for vegan D3 or lichen-derived D3 on the label or in the product's ingredient FAQ — this fully resolves the sourcing question.
- Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) sidesteps the issue if you see it listed instead of D3.
- Halal-certified supplements and fortified foods have had the lanolin sourcing checked as part of certification.
- This applies to fortified foods as much as to standalone supplements — cereal, milk alternatives and margarine are commonly fortified with D3 and rarely state the source.

Is vitamin D3 vegan?
