Is E150d (caramel colour) halal?
E150d is halal. It is caramel colour made by heating sugars such as glucose syrup or sucrose with ammonium and sulphite compounds. Those are inorganic reactants, not animal- or alcohol-derived, and SANHA lists E150d as halal.

What E150d (sulphite ammonia caramel) actually is
E150d is the darkest of the four caramel colours and the most widely used one. It is the standard colouring in cola drinks and gives many sauces, gravies and dark breads their brown colour.
It is made by heating a carbohydrate (usually glucose syrup or sugar) in the presence of ammonium and sulphite compounds. The other classes are E150a (plain caramel), E150b (caustic sulphite) and E150c (ammonia). A label that just says E150 or caramel colour means one of these four.
Why this one is settled
The base is sugar. The ammonium and sulphite compounds are inorganic chemicals such as ammonium hydroxide or sodium sulphite, used to drive the colour reaction. None of them come from an animal, and alcohol is not part of the process.
All four caramel classes, E150a to E150d, are marked halal in our reference table for the same reason.
How to check it yourself
- No check is needed for the colour itself. On a cola or a sauce, look at the other ingredients, such as flavourings, instead.
Where you'll run into it
Cola and other dark soft drinks, soy sauce and gravy, dark bread and biscuits, sauces, stock cubes and ready meals.
Common questions
Is E150 halal?
Yes. E150 is caramel colour, and all four classes (E150a, E150b, E150c and E150d) are made from heated sugar with no animal or alcohol input.
Is caramel colour the same as caramel sweets?
No. Caramel colour is a concentrated brown colouring used in very small amounts. It is not the caramel used in sweets and desserts, which is a separate food.
