Is magnesium stearate (E470b) halal?
E470b is uncertain. Magnesium stearate is the magnesium salt of fatty acids — usually stearic acid — and those fatty acids may be plant-derived or animal-derived. The label almost never says which. It is the same structural problem as E570 (stearic acid), appearing most often in tablets and supplements.

What E470b (magnesium stearate) actually is
E470b covers magnesium salts of fatty acids. In practice the form you meet is magnesium stearate: a fine white powder that stops tablet and capsule mixes sticking to manufacturing dies.
It is made by reacting magnesium with fatty acids. Those acids come from the same pool as E570 — palm and coconut oil on the plant side, tallow and other rendered fats on the animal side.
Why this pairs with the E570 page
If stearic acid can be animal-derived, its magnesium salt can too. Our reference table marks both doubtful for animal source. Writing them as two pages is useful because labels print magnesium stearate far more often than E570.
Palm-derived material dominates many food and supplement supply chains. Pharmaceutical and generic tablet manufacture is less transparent, which is why this ingredient keeps turning up in scans of everyday supplements.
A vegan claim settles it. An unmarked magnesium stearate line does not.
