Is E476 (PGPR) halal?
E476 is uncertain. Polyglycerol polyricinoleate is made from castor oil and glycerol esters. Castor oil is plant-derived; the doubt is the glycerol, which can be plant- or animal-sourced — the same question as E422 (glycerol). SANHA lists PGPR as mushbooh for that reason.

What E476 (PGPR) actually is
PGPR is an emulsifier that thins chocolate so it coats evenly at lower cocoa-butter levels. It is common in compound chocolate, filled bars, ice-cream coatings and moulded confectionery.
Polyricinoleic acid comes from castor oil. The polyglycerol backbone is built from glycerol. Our reference citation is explicit: check the glycerol source.
Why castor oil does not settle it
People sometimes assume a plant-oil emulsifier is automatically fine. For PGPR, one half of the molecule is castor (plant); the other half is glycerol, which our table already marks uncertain when sold as E422.
This is the same discipline as the E471 family: name the part of the synthesis that can be animal-derived, and do not let the plant-sounding half of the name paper over it.
Chocolate and coatings are where scans flag it — a small E-number doing a lot of industrial work.
How to check it yourself
- A vegan mark on the chocolate or coating rules out animal-derived glycerol.
- Ask whether the PGPR uses vegetable glycerol — manufacturers that supply vegetarian chocolate lines usually know.
- Halal-certified confectionery has had emulsifier sources confirmed.
Where you'll run into it
Compound chocolate and couverture, chocolate-coated bars and biscuits, ice-cream coatings, moulded confectionery.
What the authorities say
Recognised bodies and schools of thought do not all reach the same conclusion here. We follow the most cautious reviewed position and show the others rather than hiding the disagreement.
Common questions
Is PGPR made from castor beans?
The ricinoleic part is from castor oil. The uncertainty is not the castor; it is the glycerol used to build the polyglycerol side.
Is E476 the same issue as E471?
Related pattern, different feedstock. E471 doubts fatty acids; E476 doubts glycerol. Both are animal-source mashbooh until the pack or manufacturer settles origin.
Do premium chocolate brands use it?
Less often in high cocoa-butter chocolate; more often in compound coatings and mass-market filled products where flow and cost matter.
