Is beeswax (E901) halal?
E901 is halal. Beeswax is secreted by honeybees to build honeycomb, and it is treated the same way honey is — a permissible product of an insect, rather than the insect itself. It carries none of the disagreement that surrounds shellac (E904), the other common insect-derived glazing agent.

What E901 (beeswax) actually is
Beeswax is the wax bees secrete from glands to construct honeycomb. Refined and purified, it is used to give sweets, fruit and some cheese rinds a smooth, glossy protective coating.
White beeswax is bleached and purified from the raw yellow wax; both are the same underlying substance.
Why this one doesn't carry E904's disagreement
Beeswax and shellac are structurally similar cases — both are secretions from an insect, used for the same purpose, glazing. Our E904 (shellac) page explains why that one is genuinely contested: some authorities distinguish an insect's secretion from its body, by analogy with honey, and some do not.
Beeswax does not attract that same live disagreement, largely because honey's permissibility is uncontroversial and long-established, and beeswax is understood as following directly from it. That is a meaningful difference from shellac, which remains disputed precisely because the honey analogy is argued, not universally accepted, for that specific case.
