What E903 (carnauba wax) actually is
Carnauba wax is scraped and refined from the surface of leaves of Copernicia cerifera, a wax palm grown in northeastern Brazil. It has the hardest natural wax of any commercial glazing agent, which is why it produces such a durable, high shine.
It coats sweets, fruit and tablets the same way beeswax or shellac do, but from an entirely plant source.
Why this one is the simplest of the glazing agents
Unlike beeswax (E901) or shellac (E904), there is no insect or animal involved in producing carnauba wax at any point — it is harvested directly from a plant leaf, dried, and refined. There is nothing analogous to check.
It has become the more common choice in vegan-labelled confectionery specifically because it removes the question entirely rather than resolving it favourably, the way shellac's honey analogy tries to.
How to check it yourself
- No check needed.
Where you'll run into it
Glazed sweets and chocolate, coated tablets and supplements, glazed fruit and citrus wax coatings, cosmetics, including lipstick and mascara.
Common questions
Is carnauba wax vegan?
Yes. It is harvested from a palm leaf with no animal involvement, which is why it is the standard glazing choice in vegan-labelled sweets.
Is carnauba wax the same as beeswax?
They serve the same purpose — a glossy protective coating — but carnauba is plant-derived and beeswax is an insect product. Both are halal in our table, but for different reasons.
Is glazing agent 903 / carnauba wax halal?
Yes. Glazing agent 903 is E903 (carnauba wax), a plant wax our table marks halal. Do not confuse it with E904 (shellac), which is uncertain.
