What E341 actually is
E341 covers mono-, di- and tricalcium phosphates — used as anti-caking agents, calcium fortifiers and acidity regulators in baking powder, salt, supplements and powdered foods.
It is easy to confuse with E542 (bone phosphate), which is made from animal bone and stays uncertain. E341 is a different additive: halal certifiers list it as a mineral salt.
Why this phosphate is halal
Two halal certifiers list E341 as halal. SANHA (South Africa) lists it as made from phosphoric acid, and MUIS (Singapore) lists it as a mineral salt of phosphoric acid from phosphate ore, without its doubtful mark.
The bone worry belongs to a different additive. Phosphate made from animal bone has its own number, E542 (bone phosphate), and both bodies treat that one as doubtful. A label that says E339, E341, E450, E451 or E452 is not E542.
How to check it yourself
- No check is needed for E341 itself. Check the other ingredients on the label as usual.
- If the label lists E542 (bone phosphate), that is a separate additive and it stays uncertain.
