Is E451 halal?
E451 is halal. Triphosphates are salts of phosphoric acid, made from mineral phosphate. SANHA lists them as halal, and MUIS lists the same phosphate family as a mineral salt. Bone phosphate is a different additive, E542.

What E451 actually is
E451 covers sodium and potassium triphosphates (sodium tripolyphosphate, often written STPP). They hold water in processed meat and seafood, stabilise processed cheese and bind minerals in many foods.
They sit between E450 (diphosphates) and E452 (polyphosphates) in the same phosphate family, and our reference table marks all three halal.
Why this phosphate is halal
SANHA (South Africa) lists E451 as halal, made from phosphoric acid. MUIS (Singapore) does not list it on its own, but its E450 entry, which covers polyphosphates, lists them as a mineral salt of phosphoric acid without its doubtful mark.
The bone worry belongs to a different additive. Phosphate made from animal bone has its own number, E542 (bone phosphate), and both bodies treat that one as doubtful. A label that says E339, E341, E450, E451 or E452 is not E542.
How to check it yourself
- No check is needed for E451 itself. Check the other ingredients on the label as usual.
- If the label lists E542 (bone phosphate), that is a separate additive and it stays uncertain.
Where you'll run into it
Processed meat and ham, seafood, prawns and surimi, processed cheese, frozen fish fillets.
Common questions
Is sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) halal?
Yes. Sodium tripolyphosphate is E451, and our reference table marks it halal. In seafood and meat, the question is the meat or fish itself, not the phosphate.
Is this the same as E542?
No. E542 is edible bone phosphate — bone is in the name, and it stays uncertain. E451 is a mineral phosphate salt.
Do I need a vegetarian mark?
Not for E451. That advice belongs to E542, the phosphate made from bone.
