E339 is halal. Sodium phosphates are salts of phosphoric acid, made from mined phosphate ore. Halal certifiers SANHA and MUIS both list them as halal. Phosphate made from bone is a different additive, E542.

What E339 actually is
E339 is the sodium salt of phosphoric acid (E338), used as an acidity regulator, emulsifying salt and sequestrant — common in processed cheese, meat and powdered drinks.
It belongs to the same phosphate family as E341, E450, E451 and E452, which our reference table also marks halal.
Why this phosphate is halal
Two halal certifiers list E339 as halal. SANHA (South Africa) lists it as made from phosphoric acid, and MUIS (Singapore) lists it as a mineral salt of phosphoric acid from phosphate ore, without its doubtful mark.
The bone worry belongs to a different additive. Phosphate made from animal bone has its own number, E542 (bone phosphate), and both bodies treat that one as doubtful. A label that says E339, E341, E450, E451 or E452 is not E542.
How to check it yourself
- No check is needed for E339 itself. Check the other ingredients on the label as usual.
- If the label lists E542 (bone phosphate), that is a separate additive and it stays uncertain.
