What E503 (ammonium carbonates) actually is
E503 is a raising agent, sometimes called baker's ammonia. When heated it breaks down into gas, which makes thin biscuits and crackers light and crisp.
It is made from ammonia and carbon dioxide. Most of it leaves the food as gas during baking.
Why there is no doubt here
Despite the word ammonia, nothing in E503 comes from an animal or from urine. It is produced industrially from ammonia gas and carbon dioxide. Our reference table marks it halal.
How to check it yourself
- No check is needed for E503 itself.
Where you'll run into it
