Is food with wine in the ingredients halal?
No. No. Wine listed as an ingredient is haram in our table, following JAKIM MS 1500:2019. It does not matter how much, or that the food was cooked. Wine vinegar is a different ingredient and is halal in our table.

What Wine actually is
Wine is used in food for taste: in sauces, ready meals, gravies, desserts, cheese and meat dishes. On the label it can appear as wine, red wine, white wine or a named wine such as Marsala or sherry.
Other drinks show up the same way. Our table also marks beer and rum as haram when listed, and ethanol declared as an additive is E1510, also haram.
Why wine is haram but wine vinegar is not
Wine is an intoxicant, and the Qur’an forbids intoxicants. Halal standards such as JAKIM MS 1500 do not allow it as an ingredient, so our table marks it haram with no amount limit.
Wine vinegar is wine that has fully turned into vinegar. Our table marks wine vinegar halal, following HFA guidance. So vinaigre de vin or Weinessig on a mustard or dressing is not the same as vin or Wein.
Flavourings that used alcohol to carry the taste are a separate, doubtful case: the label rarely says how much is left. See natural flavourings.
How to check it yourself
- Read the ingredient list for wine, a named wine (Marsala, sherry, port), beer or rum. If one is listed, our table says haram.
- Check the word right after it: wine vinegar is a different ingredient.
- A halal certificate means no wine was used.
Where you'll run into it
Sauces and gravies, ready meals, especially French and Italian dishes, desserts, cakes and chocolates, cheese dishes and fondue, meat and fish dishes.
Common questions
Does the alcohol not cook off?
Our table does not make that exception. Wine listed as an ingredient is haram, cooked or not.
Is wine vinegar halal?
Yes, in our table wine vinegar is halal. It is wine that has turned fully into vinegar, so it is treated as a different ingredient.
