Best halal food scanner apps in 2026: an honest list

There is no single best halal scanner app. TagHalal is the most used and has the biggest product database. Halal Food Scanner (ours) checks every ingredient and tells you when it isn’t sure, with the reason. To check a halal certificate, use Verify Halal in Malaysia and BPJPH’s Cek Produk Halal in Indonesia.

We make one of these apps

We build Halal Food Scanner, so read this list with that in mind. We wrote it because nearly every "best halal scanner apps" list online is written by one of the apps it ranks. Every number below comes from each app’s own Google Play and App Store page, read on 2 November 2026 (US store unless noted). Where another app is better for a job, we say so.

Three kinds of halal scanner

Halal scanner apps answer in one of three ways, and it matters which one you use.

  • Product database: the app looks the barcode up in its own list of products marked halal or haram (TagHalal, Scan Halal, Mustakshif). Fast when the product is in the list, but the list can be out of date when a recipe changes, and it doesn’t always show why.
  • Ingredient check: the app reads the ingredients and checks each one (Halal Food Scanner, Halal Check, HalalChecker AI, Tayib; TagHalal falls back to this). This works for products no list has, and it shows which line is the problem. It can’t see how meat was slaughtered, so meat, gelatine and similar ingredients stay Uncertain unless the pack says more.
  • Certificate lookup: you check whether a product or company holds a certificate from a halal body (Verify Halal for JAKIM in Malaysia, BPJPH in Indonesia). This is the strongest answer where it exists, but it only covers certified products.

Halal Food Scanner: best for knowing why

Our app scans the barcode or a photo of the ingredients and checks each ingredient against a reviewed table sourced to bodies such as JAKIM, IFANCA, SANHA, the Halal Food Authority and MUI. AI only reads the label; it never decides the verdict. The answer is Halal, Haram, Uncertain or Not checked, and every flagged line says why. You can choose how strict it is about flavourings, ask the maker in one tap, and use it in English, Arabic, French, German, Malay and Indonesian. No account and no ads. See all features.

Where it is weaker: it is new (1K+ Play installs, few ratings), it has no restaurant finder or prayer times, it doesn’t check certificates or halal logos, and ingredients scans are limited to 30 free a week unless you take a supporter plan.

TagHalal: best for the biggest product database

TagHalal (MyOnlyIslam) is the most installed halal scanner: 1M+ on Google Play and 4.7 from almost 9,000 ratings on the US App Store. It checks the barcode against its own database, reads the ingredients when a product is missing, lets you set a madhab and takes product submissions from users. It has ads; the developer says free use is limited to 5 scans a day, and Premium costs $4.99 a month. Halal Food Scanner vs TagHalal.

Halal Check: best all-in-one with prayer tools

Halal Check (com.islam.halalcheck, App Store "Halal Check Food Scanner") reads a photo of the label with AI, searches more than 500 E-numbers and can give verdicts by school, including Jafari. It also has prayer times, Qibla and a Hijri calendar. It shows ads and says it has no paywall; Pro removes the ads. A different app, "Halal Check: AI Scanner" (halalcheck.app), has a similar name. Halal Food Scanner vs Halal Check.

Mustakshif: best for certified products and restaurants

Mustakshif checks a barcode, or a name you type, against a list of halal-certified products, and its Halal Place feature finds halal restaurants. It is free with ads, with paid plans from $0.99 a month. Its Play rating is 2.8.

Scan Halal: US and Canada only

Scan Halal has 1M+ Play installs, but its listing says it supports US and Canadian products, and neither store version has been updated since April 2025. Pro costs $9.99 a month.

HalalChecker AI and Tayib: newer AI scanners

HalalChecker AI (Durianator Studio) reads the barcode, a photo of the front of the pack or the ingredient label, and costs $4.90 a month or $29.99 a year, with a monthly scan limit on the free plan. Tayib (tayib.app) is built for Muslims in the US, with an "AI Deep Scan", a madhab choice and halal alternatives, from $5.99 a month. Both are small so far.

Malaysia and Indonesia: check the certificate

In Malaysia, Verify Halal (Serunai Commerce, "an initiative under Malaysia’s JAKIM") lets you scan or search products, premises and restaurants with a JAKIM-recognised certificate. In Indonesia, BPJPH’s Cek Produk Halal search on bpjph.halal.go.id finds products by certificate number, product name or company. Neither reads ingredients, so for imports or uncertified products use an ingredient checker too. Halal Food Scanner works in Malay and Indonesian.

Same name, different app

Several products use the words "halal food scanner". This page and our app are halalfoodscanner.app: Halal Food Scanner & Check on the App Store and Google Play. halalfoodscanner.com is a separate web app by Zero G Foundry and HalalLaunchpad, and "Halal Checker: Food Scan" (whose description calls it Halal Food Scanner) is a separate app by another developer. We are not connected to either.

Common questions

What is the best halal food scanner app?

It depends on what you need. TagHalal has the biggest product database. Halal Food Scanner checks every ingredient and says Uncertain, with the reason, when the label doesn’t settle it. For a certificate, use Verify Halal in Malaysia or BPJPH’s Cek Produk Halal in Indonesia.

Is there a free halal scanner app?

Yes. Halal Food Scanner is free to download with no ads; barcode scans are always free and you get 30 free ingredients scans a week. TagHalal, Halal Check and Mustakshif are free with ads. Our online halal checker is free with no app.

Can a halal scanner app be wrong?

Yes. Recipes change, product databases go out of date and labels don’t say how meat was slaughtered or what carries a flavouring. A good app tells you when it isn’t sure instead of showing a pass. If it matters, check the pack or ask the maker.

Is a halal scanner app a fatwa or a certification?

No. Scanner apps give guidance from references. Only a certificate from a halal body certifies a product, and only a scholar gives a ruling.

Which halal scanner works in Germany or France?

Apps that read the ingredients work with German and French labels. See our guides for Germany and France.

Best-effort guidance compiled from sourced references — not a religious ruling and not a certification. Schools of thought differ, and manufacturers change formulations without notice. Please verify with the producer or your local authority when it matters. How we decide a verdict.
