Halal scanner app for the UK

To check if food is halal in a UK supermarket, scan the barcode or photograph the ingredients with an app such as Halal Food Scanner or TagHalal. The lines that decide most products are gelatine, rennet, whey, flavouring, E471, E120 (carmine) and anything with pork or alcohol. Scan Halal only covers US and Canadian products.

UK label words and what the app answers

UK labels follow the same rules as the EU: an additive is listed by its job, then its E-number or its name, so "Emulsifier: E471" and "Emulsifier: mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids" are the same. The verdict column is the same answer the app gives.

Vitamins come up because added vitamin D3 is often made from lanolin (sheep’s wool) and labels don’t say the source. See vitamin D3.

Tips for shopping in the UK

  • Suitable for vegetarians rules out gelatine and animal rennet, but a flavouring can still be carried in alcohol. Scan the rest of the list.
  • Meat and chicken: the label can’t show how the animal was slaughtered. Look for a certificate from a body you trust, such as HMC or HFA; a scanner can’t replace it.
  • Imported products from world-food aisles often have a barcode no database knows. Use the ingredients scan.

Common questions

Is there a halal scanner app for the UK?

Yes. Halal Food Scanner and TagHalal both work with UK products and can read the ingredient list when a barcode isn’t found. Scan Halal only covers US and Canadian products.

Is "suitable for vegetarians" halal?

Not always. It rules out gelatine and animal rennet, but not alcohol, wine or a flavouring carried in alcohol.

Is E471 halal?

E471 can be made from plant or animal fat and UK labels almost never say which. See E471.

Can I check without the app?

Yes. Paste the ingredients into the free online halal checker.
