French label words and what the app answers
In French, lard is pork fat or bacon, not the English "lard" (that is saindoux). Both are pork. The verdict column is the same answer the app gives.
| On the label | Answer | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Gélatine de porc | Haram | Pork |
| Gélatine | Uncertain | Can be animal-derived |
| Gélatine de bœuf | Uncertain | Depends on slaughter |
| Gélatine de poisson | Halal | |
| Saindoux | Haram | Pork |
| Lard, lard fumé | Haram | Pork |
| Couenne | Haram | Pork |
| Jambon | Haram | Pork |
| Présure | Uncertain | Can be animal-derived |
| Présure microbienne | Halal | |
| Lactosérum | Uncertain | Can be animal-derived |
| Arôme, arôme naturel | Uncertain | Uncertain under the Strict standard. Under the app’s default (major halal authorities), a plain arôme passes unless it names alcohol, a drink, meat or cheese. |
| Alcool | Haram | Alcohol |
| Vin | Haram | Alcohol |
| Rhum | Haram | Alcohol |
| Vinaigre de vin | Halal | |
| Mono- et diglycérides d’acides gras (E471) | Uncertain | Can be animal-derived |

Tips for shopping in France
- Meat, charcuterie and chicken: the label can’t show how the animal was slaughtered. Look for a halal certificate; a scanner can’t replace it.
- Sans alcool on a drink or sans gélatine on sweets answers one question, not every one. Scan the rest of the list.
- Imported products from Maghreb or Turkish shops often have a barcode no database knows. Use the ingredients scan.
Common questions
Is there a halal scanner app for France?
Yes. Halal Food Scanner reads French labels and works in French and Arabic. TagHalal and Halal Check are also in French.
What does "présure" mean on a French label?
Présure is rennet, used to make cheese. Traditional rennet comes from calves. "Présure microbienne" is microbial rennet. See rennet.
Is E471 halal?
E471 can be made from plant or animal fat and the label almost never says which. See E471.
